Rallar is home many creatures also present on Earth. Some, however, are not commonly found in our world outside of myth and legend.
Dragons
Dragons on Rallar are two winged, two legged warm-blooded reptilianesque predators. They can spray liquid fire from glands in their mouth, which they use for hunting and defence. They usually hunt large mammals like cattle and deer. They live in mountainous areas, sleeping in caves and on ledges.
Dragons are used in the military as aerial cavalry mounts. Military dragons are taught to respect humans and to obey the commands of their rider. They are paired with a rider from hatching, when the rider is in their mid teens, and form a mutual bond of trust and respect.
Gargoyles
Gargoyles are pack-hunting ambush predators and opportunistic scavengers. They have a monkey-like body structure and large wings on their back. Their skin is rough and stony and can change colour and texture to match their surroundings. They tend to colonize cliff passes and cities with tall stone architecture. City gargoyles eat rats, pigeons, stray dogs, rubbish and whatever food they can steal.
Statues of gargoyles are sometimes installed on building ledges and rooftops as symbols of watchfulness and protection. Real gargoyles often rearrange and imitate the statues, hoping pigeons will try to land on them. This can make it hard to tell whether a particular gargoyle is a statue or not until it swoops down and steals your lunch.
Trolls
Trolls are large grey humanoid creatures who live in dark, damp environments such as in caves and under large bridges. They are stupid, violent and territorial, so people generally try to avoid them. Their rough, stony skin has the same stone-mimicking capabilities as that of gargoyles. Some of them collect rocks, and sit for hours rearranging them and trying to match their skin to them. Some orcs use trolls as cavalry mounts.
Naiads
Naiads are water-dwelling magical creatures, who are both playful and dangerous. They make an eerie and vaguely annoying giggling sound. They don’t have a solid physical form, but can shape water into a body if they want one, always taking the form of a female humanoid. They can move very fast through water. The only way for a naiad to die is for all the water it is currently in to be evaporated.
Dryads
Dryads are predatory plants which are very strong and fast. They look sort of like a smallish tree, with bark and leaf types varying between individuals. They eat through their roots, burying their vanquished prey and draining nutrition from them, but they can retract their roots into their body in an instant.
Dryads are grown around the skeleton of a “host” creature that their parent killed and planted their dryad seed in. As they grow they consume the flesh of the host creature, leaving only enough connective tissue for the body to still hold together. For this reason, they can be the size and shape of any creature with enough body mass to sustain the young dryad.
